Clearing Past Emotional Baggage using Hypnotherapy
We
all have "stuff" from
our past, commonly known as emotional baggage. The most common and
toxic forms of emotional baggage are anger,
fear,
hurt
and sadness, and guilt.
The
metaphor used is that these negative emotions are stored in
our unconscious minds, and in our body as little black bags
that
block the flow of energy and information through our neural network
pathways. It is common for people who are getting deep tissue massage
to experience a partial memory that surfaces as an emotion, for example
the masseur/masseuse hits a little black bag, and up comes the sadness
from the event stored in that little black bag.
Deepak
Chopra says that a negative emotion has two elements, a thought and a
physical sensation in the body. That's why we say negative emotions
hurt us, there is a physical element that is frequently ignored, and
when the memory comes up, the hurt manifests in the body also. If we
see something on TV, we could have the same imagery, but it does not
hurt to the same extent because we don't have the physical feeling in
the body that hurts, unless the image reminds us of one of our own past
experiences with the emotion in it.
Our
subconscious minds want to resolve this baggage from the past, and let
go of the emotions, and keep the positive learnings, otherwise known as
experience. In a nutshell, that's what the emotional clearing process
aims to achieve. It's a sort of spring clean of the emotional baggage,
clearing out the negative stuff from the past that's trapped in your
body and in your subconscious mind.
Once
all this rubbish is cleared out, it leaves you free to make new choices
that are not based on the stuff from the past coming up. Stuff from the
past comes up when things trigger old memories. The triggers could be
anything, a tone of voice, the look on someones face, a word, an
object, anything in fact that your subconscious associates with that
old memory, and the chain of similar memories. It is learned automatic
behaviour, like tying your shoelace automatically or touch typing. With
practice you get good at everything automatic, and we can become
"expert" at bringing up anger,
sadness,
hurt, fear,
guilt
and other negative emotions, for example someone could have a memory of
being humiliated at school by a teacher, and any sort of event that has
any similarity brings up the shame and the fear. Another example is
someone who was brought up in an environment where there was a lot of
shouting and anger, and if someone else expresses irritation, up comes
the anger from your body in response,.
These
negative emotions are very rarely to our benefit, and if they come up a
lot, they can be harmful to the body over time, so it's much safer and
healthier to clear them from the past, and to learn new and more
appropriate responses.
